Doctor warns against peeing in the shower as it can lead to serious health issue

Aug 17, 2023

Doctors have warned people against peeing in the shower too regularly, as it could 'trigger' a serious health issue that could make you go to the toilet more often

Let's be honest, we've all peed in the shower at least once, right? Whether you think it's convenient and saves time, or you think it's gross but have done it once by complete accident, it's not an uncommon thing to do - even if most of us would never admit to doing it.

However, according to one doctor, we shouldn't make peeing in the shower a regular habit, as it could actually trigger a serious health issue that could impact how often we need to go to the toilet each day. Doctor Teresa Irwin, a gynaecologist, said that in women specifically, peeing in the shower isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it can be detrimental if done too often.

In a video shared to her @dr.teresa.irwin account on TikTok, Dr Irwin said that peeing in the shower can actually be beneficial for women if done sparingly because standing upright allows your bladder to fully empty as it isn't being restricted by the motion of squatting or sitting down.

But you shouldn't add a wee to your daily shower routine, as you could actually force yourself to become incontinent. The doctor said your brain will eventually begin to associate the sound of running water with the need to pee, so that whenever you turn on a tap - even just to do the washing up - you'll feel the need to rush to the loo.

She said: "I know there's been some confusion over the negative effects of standing up and peeing in the shower, so I just want to clarify some things. Peeing in the shower is actually a proper way to pee for women because it allows you to empty your bladder fully.

"What one thing can be caused by peeing in the shower constantly is that it can become a trigger so that whenever you hear water, whether it's washing the dishes or the sink or the shower, that may cause you to want to pee because it becomes a trigger. That's if you're doing it all the time. If you just do it occasionally it's not going to be an issue, typically.

"The other thing is your flow will probably be a little bit slower when you're in the shower. But that's not harmful. As a matter of fact, it's good because it's not causing you to put a lot of stress and strain [on yourself] when you forcefully pee."

Commenters on the post were thankful to Dr Irwin for sharing the information, as many had no idea. One said: "Good to know!," while another added: "I never knew that," and a third posted: "Wow, that makes so much more sense."
