Lafourche Parish residents complain of yellow water from faucets

People who live in Lafourche Parish say their faucets have been running yellow water for months.

Residents of the Caro Estates neighborhood say they're not getting straight answers from the Lafourche Water District on this ongoing issue that is becoming more and more frequent. This is leaving residents to buy gallons of water to supplement their supply. Resident Erica Duthu says the water that is being pumped through their homes is as yellow as urine most days.

"We'll get clear water for maybe a week to a few days, and then if we go away for a day on the weekend and come back and run the water, we have yellow water coming out," Duthu said.

The Lafourche Parish Water District issued a notice to residents on Tuesday afternoon stating they were experiencing water quality changes in Bayou Lafourche, and as a result, yellow water is coming from the distribution center.

The water district says they were flushing the system and, on Friday, told WDSU this issue stemmed from low water levels in the bayou due to the drought, which in turn caused pumping issues from the station.

However, residents like Duthu say told me the water district said the issue might have stemmed from the developer building homes in the area.

Another resident named Jacob Babin says the water is sometimes yellow, like urine or beer, and he says the people who live in the area deserve straight answers.

"We heard about it at the beginning of the week, and two nights ago, it affected us," Babin said. "We have a 5-year-old son who bathes and it's almost post-hurricane water. It's nasty, it's yellow."

"Definitely don't want to drink it, its nasty, its brown, yellow," Babin said. "Paying customers, we should be having clean water."
